Specialized Bicycle Components Expands Recall of Bike Brake Levers Due to Crash Hazard

The adjuster cap and brake cable can slide out of position and make the brakes non-operational. This can cause a rider to lose control of the bicycle and crash.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.

Name of Product: Bicycle Brake Levers

Units: About 100 (about 600 of the 2010 and 2011 Shiv Modules and 2012 Shiv TT modules were recalled in April 2012).

Importer: Specialized Bicycle Components Inc., Morgan Hill, Calif.

Hazard: The adjuster cap and brake cable can slide out of position and make the brakes non-operational. This can cause a rider to lose control of the bicycle and crash.

Incidents/Injuries: Specialized is aware of one incident worldwide in which the rider lost the function of both brakes. The firm has received no reports of injury or property damage.

Description: This recall includes Tektro TL-83 brake levers sold on 2012 S-Works Shiv bicycle frame modules, 2012 S-Works Shiv TT bicycle frame modules, and sold as aftermarket service parts for these modules. The TL-83 is a version of the TL-720 brake lever, modified with a quick release slot at the top of the lever arm and designed exclusively for use with aerodynamic handlebars (aerobars) sold as original equipment on these modules. They are black aluminum and model number “TL-720″ can be read on the side of the lever arm when braking action is applied.

Sold at: Authorized Specialized Bicycle Components retailers from May 2011 to June 2012. The bicycle frame modules sold for between $5,500 and $6,100. The brake levers sold for about $80 as service parts.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop riding modules equipped with TL-83 brake levers and return the levers or modules to an authorized Specialized Bicycle Components retailer for free replacement brake levers.

Units: About 170 units

Manufacturer: Big Cat Human Powered Vehicles LLC, of Winter Garden, Fla.

Hazard: The bicycle frame can crack, which can cause the rider to lose control and crash.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported

The bicycle frame can crack, which can cause the rider to lose control and crash.

Description: This recall involves model year 2010 Catbike Musashi recumbent bicycles. The bicycles were sold in the following colors: black, white, silver, yellow, orange, red, lime green, pink, blue, candy purple, candy red, candy green, candy blue and sparkle orange. “Musashi” is printed on the frame and “Catbike” is printed on the seat, frame and headrest. Serial numbers CBM0002 to CBM0170 are included in this recall. The serial number can be found underneath the main frame where the seat bottom is located.

Sold at: Catbike authorized dealers nationwide from February 2010 through December 2010 for about $2,350.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled bicycle and contact a Catbike dealer for a free frame replacement.

Units: About 2,700

Manufacturer: Hydro-Gear Limited Partnership, of Sullivan, Ill.

Hazard: A drive gear in the lawn tractor’s hydrostatic transaxle can fail causing brake failure, posing a crash hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: This recall involves Cub Cadet, MTD Gold and Troy-Bilt lawn tractors sold with Hydro-Gear model 618-0319 and 618-04270B transaxles. Cub Cadet and Troy-Bilt tractors included in this recall have dates of manufacture (DOM) ranging from December 2010 through March 2011. The DOM can be found on a label on the underside of the seat. MTD Gold can be identified by serial numbers starting with 1L15 or 1L16. Affected transaxles have serial numbers with the first four digits ranging between 0333 and 0348. Transaxle model and serial numbers are printed on a label on the transaxle.

Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.

Name of Product: Weehoo iGo Bicycle Pedal Trailers

Units: About 2,700

Manufacturer: Weehoo Inc., of Golden, Colo.

Hazard: The receiver on the trailer’s seat post hitch can crack and cause the trailer to detach, posing fall and crash hazards to the child in the seat.

Incidents/Injuries: CPSC and Weehoo have received one report of the trailer’s receiver cracking while in use. No injuries have been reported.

Description: This recall involves 2011 Weehoo iGo bicycle trailers manufactured between April 2011 and July 2011. The trailer has a steel frame with an adjustable seat for passengers 38 to 52 inches tall, two pedals with straps, an enclosed sprocket and chain, a 20-inch wheel, two pannier pockets, a flagpole and a flag. The seat, pannier pockets, and flag are made of red, heavy-duty nylon. The pannier pockets and the flag have the word “Weehoo” and the logo printed on them in reflective material. The serial numbers for the recalled trailers contain the letter “D” and can be found on the underside of the iGo frame, by the pedals.

Sold at: Bicycle retail stores nationwide between April 2011 and July 2011 for about $390.

Manufactured in: Taiwan

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled iGo trailers and contact Weehoo for the repair. Consumers will receive a steel reinforcement sleeve to be installed over the receiver.
